A Guide to Playa’s best sports bars
If you are a sports junkie like me, a trip to paradise can bring a bit of fear and trepidation about keeping track of your favourite NFL, NBA, NHL or Major league baseball team while you are away. Mexican TV shows a lot of soccer and some NFL games, but if you want to sit down and watch your favourite team play, you need to look for the best sports bars in town.
One of the unique bars in town is called Los Tabernacos. Situated on 10th street between 10 and 15 in Playa del Carmen, it caters specifically to fans of the Montreal Canadiens. On game nights, the bar is packed and people are wearing Montreal t-shirts and sweaters. The best thing – when Montreal wins, free tequila for everyone. On off days, they will be showing the most popular sports event of the day, especially during events like the World Cup or any other major football championship.
Another popular spot for locals and tourists alike is Boston Pizza. Located just 5 minutes from downtown, they have multiple TVs and should be able to show you what you want to see. And, the menu is very similar to their other locations throughout Canada and the United States.
Another popular location is the Tequila Barrell, located right on famous Fifth Avenue 10 and 12 Streets. It has multiple screens, tables right on Fifth Avenue and, if you are so inclined, a betting area in the back where you can wager on your favourite team or any major event.
So, it’s Sunday afternoon, your favourite NFL team is playing, but you’d like to be near the beach? Head to Zenzi’s, located at 10th Street and the beach. It’s a lively place with great entertainment and lots of NFL plans filling the place to cheer on their favourite team every Sunday afternoon.
There are many other great places to watch sports events while you are on vacation in paradise. These four establishments offer something unique and a link to be able to follow the fortunes of your favourite team after a long day at the beach or visiting one of the many attractions in the Riviera Maya.
